Oottukkādu Vēṅkaṭa Kavi
c. 1700 – 1765 · Pre-Trinity — Dance composition master
Master of Bharatanāṭyam compositions. Created 'Alaipāyudē' and other dance masterpieces that remain central to the repertoire.
Biography
Oottukkādu Vēṅkaṭa Kavi (c. 1700–1765) was the pre-eminent composer for Bharatanāṭyam in the pre-Trinity period. Born in Oottukkādu, Tanjore district, he composed primarily for the temple dance tradition of the Tamil country.
His most famous composition, 'Alaipāyudē' (in Kāṇavāri), is a masterpiece of dance-music integration — every phrase corresponds to a gesture (hasta) and step (āḍavu). His 'Paḷḷāṇḍu' (in Yamunākalyāṇi) and 'Kaliṅga Nartana' (in Nāṭa) are equally celebrated.
Vēṅkaṭa Kavi's compositions are structurally designed for dance — the rhythmic patterns (tālam) align with the dancer's footwork, and the melodic contours suggest specific gestures. Primary sources include the Sarasvati Mahal Library editions (1970) and the Oottukkādu nāṭya paramparā manuscripts.
