Purandara Dāsa

1484 – 1566 · Pre-Trinity — Karnataka Saṅgīta Pitāmaha

The father of Carnatic music pedagogy. Composed ~475,000 devaranamas in Kannada, systematised svara exercises, geethams, and Suladi-sapta tāla.

Biography

Purandara Dāsa (1484–1566) was born Śrīnivasa in a wealthy merchant family near Shivamogga, Karnataka. After a life-changing spiritual conversion, he renounced wealth and became a Haridāsa — a wandering singer-saint devoted to Viṭhala of Pandharpur.

He is universally regarded as the Pitāmaha (grandfather) of Karnataka Saṅgīta. He created the structured pedagogical system that every Carnatic student still follows — svara exercises (saraḷi, janta, dhaṭṭu, alaṅkāra), geethams (simple songs in fixed rāga-tāla), and the Suladi-sapta tāla framework. His ~475,000 devaranamas (of which a few thousand survive) are in Kannada and form the foundation of the Haridāsa bhakti tradition.

His compositions are direct, simple, and deeply moving — often addressing the listener as a friend. The mudrā 'Purandaravittala' appears in every piece, linking the composer inseparably to his deity. Primary sources include the Karnataka Saṅgīta Nṛtya Academy editions and the Haridāsa paramparā oral tradition.
