Paṭṭnam Subramaṇiya Iyer
1845 – 1902 · Post-Trinity — The Tiger of Music
Direct disciple of Tyāgarāja's lineage. Known as the 'Tiger of Music' for his intense, passionate compositions.
Biography
Paṭṭnam Subramaṇiya Iyer (1845–1902) was a direct disciple of Manambuchavadi Venkatasubbayyar, who was himself a disciple of Tyāgarāja. This places Paṭṭnam squarely in the Walajapet-Manambuchavadi textual tradition.
Known as the 'Tiger of Music' (Saṅgīta Vyaṅghram) for his intense, passionate performing style, Paṭṭnam composed kṛtis that are structurally dense and emotionally raw. His Tōḍī kṛtis (particularly 'Raghuvara Nannu') are considered masterpieces of the post-Trinity era.
Unlike Tyāgarāja, Paṭṭnam did not use a consistent mudrā — some compositions are unsigned, others bear his name. His style is closer to Tyāgarāja than to Dīkṣitar or Śyāmā Śāstri, but with a harder edge. Primary sources include the Tyāgarāja Vidvat Samajam editions (1960) and the Paṭṭnam paramparā manuscripts.
