Harikēśanallur Muttiah Bhagavatar
1877 – 1945 · Post-Trinity — Creator of Hamsadhvani
Prolific composer and creator of the rāga Hamsadhvani. Composed over 400 kṛtis and was a leading figure of the early twentieth-century Chennai music scene.
Biography
Harikēśanallur Muttiah Bhagavatar (1877–1945) was one of the most prolific composers of the early twentieth century. Born in Tirunelveli district, he created over 400 kṛtis and is best known as the creator of the rāga Hamsadhvani — the five-note rāga (sa-ri-ga-pa-ni) that has become one of the most popular concert openers.
His 'Gaṇapati Kautuvam' in Hamsadhvani is a standard concert opener, and his patriotic composition 'Mātṛbhāratam' (in Dēvamanōhari) is a rare example of nationalist sentiment in Carnatic music. He was also a celebrated performer and teacher, with disciples including the legendary Brinda-Muktha duo.
The mudrā 'Harikēśa' or 'Harikēśanallur' appears in his compositions. His style is melodic, accessible, and emotionally direct — the voice of a popular composer who understood both tradition and audience. Primary sources include the Music Academy editions (1960) and the Harikēśanallur paramparā manuscripts.
